Wireless Home Networking

1.
The first thing you need is what's called a Wireless Broadband Router. This device takes
your Internet connection and shares it wirelessly throughout your
home or office. Without getting too technical, most cable and dsl
service providers only allow their customers to have 1 IP Address.
This is a problem because every computer on the Internet needs it's
own IP address. This is solved by something called Network Address
Translation or NAT. Basically what happens is the router takes that
1 IP address for itself, and then gives each computer access through
itself to the Internet. .
2.
The next thing you need are the desktop wireless adapters or Wireless USB Adapters. Each desktop computer
that is going to be wireless needs one of these. It is a small device
that connects to your desktop PCs via their USB port and allows
them to communicate wirelessly to the Wireless Broadband Router.
3.
Next you will need a Wireless PC Card Adapter for your laptop. It
is basically the same thing as the Wireless USB Adapter except that
it fits in the PCMCIA slot in your laptop. These adapters allow
your laptop to communicate with the Wireless Broadband Router so
they may surf the Internet wirelessly.
4.
The last thing you may need is a desktop network card. These are
only necessary if you plan on directly wiring a desktop to the router.
Many people choose to do this because they have a desktop computer
that is going to be close to the router , and they want to save
a little money.
That's all the equipment you need.
